CR's Frag Shack

So update on evap... went through a whopping 2 gallons yesterday!!! I blame the dehumidifier for a lot of it, but it's a necessary evil I guess. I may end up putting a glass top on the 75 to help reduce some of the evaporation since I should still get plenty of gas exchange from the frag tank. I may even place a piece of acrylic/lexan over the fuge area of the sump too.

Regardless it looks like I'll need to find a bigger ATO container... 5 gallons just isn't going to cut it because I really don't feel like refilling it or replacing the jug every 2.5 days!

To deal with the evaporation have you ever thought about using a split AC that will both heat and cool?

I haven't done any real looking, but I think they are little cost prohibitive for my needs. With the dehumidifier and heated water, I really don't need heat. Maybe when it warms up enough my window unit AC will help with humidity and evaporation? I may also need to experiment with putting a fan in the window to help exhaust the humidity instead of running the dehumidifier all the time. My main concern with that is our summers here in the south are extremely humid and I wonder if the air being pushed out might not simply be replaced with humid air from outside.

If u find a lid that fits let me know the only ones I could find were not sealed properly

I'm thinking it will have to be a DIY lid... Maybe a piece of glass or plastic with a bead of silicone to act as a gasket and just sit it on top.

So they have lids with a hole in them for bottles I was thinking of closing the hole off with acrylic like you said but for what the trash can cost I wanted something that would work easily I hope it works out for you

Great build @Coastie Reefer !!! Just watched your whole build thread and you did an amazing work.

Hey thanks, truly appreciate the compliment. It's been quite the journey.

I see you're in Tampa. I used to live in St. Pete... is Coral Corral still open? Man I miss going to that place!!!

I could a 20g brute can with a lid for about the same price, but it won't fit between my tanks. I would fit under the frag tank with ease, but I'd have to redo all my wire management, and that doesn't sound like a lot of fun. Then again... I do have the 32g brute can already and I may be able to find a longer piece of vinyl tubing. I'm just not sure the tiny ATO pump will handle the head pressure.

Yeah, I have been at Coral Corral a few times. Nice store and great customer service. They re-model the store.

If you wanna get real fancy, get two glass pieces. 48x9. Then silicone them together on the top only. That way you get a front half that you can lift up when you need to get in the tank instead of having to lift the entire piece.

Or just buy this thing:

What about getting a 20g tall tank? It’s 24x12 or something like that.

I was kicking around the idea of a 20 tall, but the space between my stands isn't quite big enough so I'd have to put it under the frag tank. I'll do some measuring when I get home to see exactly how much space I have.

Love it.... I'm doing the same thing currently. want to see how cool i can make 80 sq ft :)
Thanks, I love it too... not sure how much water you plan on putting in your space, but get ready to battle humidity. A dehumidifier is a must, at least for me it is.
