Crush Coral Bottom to Sand?

I have a 12 ft tank with a crush coral bottom was wondering if I can top the crush coral with sand for about 2 - 3 inches at on end so I can place a Sunset Wrasse or Red Coisis in tank.

I would move some of the crushed coral away from the end and just put sand in its place. With sand over the top it might be a ditritus trap
