Crushed coral/sand in the refugium

So when I got my tank it came with a bucket of crushed coral/sand... I'm in the process of building a 40 gallon breeder sump and wanted to use it in the fuge section. Anything I need to do to wash it out first and will it be alright in the fuge?

Honestly I would start out with fresh new sand. Who knows what is in the old sand. May do more harm than good in the long run. If this is not an option I assume you could wash it really good with water and let air dry for a while. Then repeat. It would definitely be better than not washing it.
