Cryptic Fuge

When you say Pictures Jeremy do you mean in the book? Hmmmm I have some sponges on my rock in my main tank but not sure if I have any in my tank downstairs. I will be digging. Or I will be putting up a trade post for rock for rock! LOL. Can you seed with boughten sponges??? Maybe finding a place that has some different ones and doing an order???

Eric

Jeremy I will keep in contact with you in case I end up ordering any or come across some. I am going to go to Reef's in GB and see if he has seen any in any of his rock and go from there. In matter of fact I will email him today.

Eric

You might be able to find some sponges locally. See if anyone in your local club has some lr rubble in their sumps with sponges. That is where mine came from.

Sounds good. Just be aware of any parasites you might be aquiring. Today when I get a chance I'll post on a sponge forum and see if they can tolerate iodine or revive dips.

this thread is making me think of making a plywood sump that is nice and long with lots of sections in it.....granted i would have to make it narrow enough to fit in my doors though :(

8'x2'x2' should do :D

If in sufficient foods are supplied for the sponges will they die and cause a nutrient spike like algae?

Would a criptic sponge fug flurish in a bac driven system or perish?

My apologies to everyone for the lack of remaining detail and pictures for that little project I posted info about. I just got in my four hammerhead pumps for the plumbing on my 420 gal DT so I've been really busy with that. In the next week I'll post more details and pictures on how to create a cryptic area within a lit sump or refugium.

Sorry this is so long. Just trying to explain as much as I can so it makes sense to everyone reading along. Again, I want to reiterate that I'm only trying to relay the information I've learned after reading Steve Tyree's book The environmental Gradient 1st edition. I'm certainly not claiming to be an expert on sponges growth, care, metabolism, etc... The book was really good though and I really did learn a lot about cryptic zones and the fauna that inhabit them.

Don't ever apologize for being long winded. It is a breath of fresh air to have someone take the time to thoroughly answer peoples questions. All too often in this hobby someone will have two or three question and get a single sentence response leaving the person in question wondering and with even more questions.
I very much appreciate your time and willingness to share your experiences and knowledge you've gained from your research.
Again thank you!!

By the way where are you located??

Im sure you've addressed it somewhere in this thread, but is there an optimal location for a cryptic zone?. For example, drain chamber, skimmer chamber, after the skimmer before the return pump etc. What about a cryptic zone in multiple locations??? I can only assume more the merrier right?!?

I think I may have come up with a great location for one but uncertain of its benefits with the given spot. Ill await your response before I share my idea.

the cleaner the chamber the better so there is less doc and larger floating things in the water....best i would say is plum it off the return pump because its meant to be the cleanest water in you system and the cryptic just one step farther in polishing it.
