I've dabbled with them somewhat in my fowls days many years ago but never got to serious.

Has anyone been running one long term with good results on a reef tank, as opposed to the typical chaeto route? (Long term as in at least a year.)

I am thinking of trying it out with my new reef setup but want to get some feedback from others first.

I always wanted to mess with them more as well. I've just got some live rock in the dark part of my sump but I haven't seen anything colonize it yet(been about a year) but I haven't really added anything to provide a fresh source of life for it since I did it. I'll be interested to see what others have for experience.

Ya I figured with all the different sponge growth and such they would do a better job at filtering the water in combination with filter socks to avoid detritus buildup on them.

I ran a cryptic sponge tank for over 3 years. It took about a year to really grow in. Like my experience with a lit macro fuge, I never saw much of an advantage from a filtration perspective but I'm sure it helped since sponges are filter feeders. I did however find it beneficial from a food source perspective. I had the cryptic sponge tank gravity feeding my display and lots of little plankton would get sucked down into the display creating a constant food source for my fish and corals.

The system:
The tank was a 40 gallon breeder with black vinyl on the back and two ends, with a black front panel and black top. It had a 3' strip light for occasional viewing. There were 2 - 1" buklheads in the top corners of back panel. One for the feed, the other was a drain that gravity fed to my display.

Livestock:
There is about 55-60lbs of nice liverock. Some creatures included feather dusters, many different sponge varieties, jelly fish, nudibranchs, copepods, amphipods, and large worms over 2-3' that makeup my nightmares. The nice thing about it is it required very little. An airstone, about 75-125 gph feed and that's it!

Check out "The Environmental Gradient- Cryptic Sponge and Sea Squirt Filtration Models" by Steve Tyree, to learn more about sponge filtration in the hobby.

I use photobucket and they just blocked usage on 3rd party sites like forums. Once I get an flickr account set up I will post photos.

Yes pics!

Sorry guys. I had to move all my images out of Photobucket.

Here it is on top, so it can be gravity fed. It has black vinyl on all sides, and a black top. The front panel is removable.

It only had two air stones for movement.

It was just live rock I had been storing in my sump at the time. Most of the cryptic life developed form the existing live rock.

Algae or GFO = removes PO/NO
Sponge or Carbon = Removes yellow stuff and organics
Skimmer or Waterchanges = Removes organics and poops

I choose the free stuff! But still use Chemi pure carbon at this point bc its so awesome!
