Cryptic sump

Pics when you get it, please :)
As promised. I do like the shapes by far but for the prices, I could have got almost triple the rock from Gulf Liverock. This was a little Under 20lbs I believe.

The Australian liverock did come with zoas on it. I am going to cut them off the rock tonight and put them in the frag tank to see what they look like opened up.

You have added a lot of diversity to the system. Competition will reduce it somewhat over time, but what survives will be optimal for your system. I'd feed your cryptic fuge with water filtered by only a 200 micron filter sock... or no filter at all. Your DT is really already a lighted fuge. I would not add a lighted Cheato or Macro fuge. While this type of fuge has its place, in your case, it might just steal ammonia from the corals and other organisms already in the system.

You might start adding a little Phyto to feed the pods that are in the new live rock. Adding additional pods might be a good addition.

I plan to leave it unfiltered. All the water will drain into this liverock bin prior to going into the sump and through filter sock/media.

Good idea on dosing phyto though. I should probably add some to the liverock now. There are a bunch of pods climbing all over the rock at night. I plan on getting this new tank running by the end of the week. Just got the 8x3 foot grow out tank leveled last night and leak tested.

Go easy on Phyto. Start at a very low dose and see how the system reacts.

I plan to add a black cryptic sump (~30 gallons) to my soon to be larger system. The system will be an existing display (90g) tired to an upgrading frag tank (160g). They will share a sump that is a 60 breeder.

Ideally I would like to keep this cryptic sump somewhat clean of detritus so what is the thought about plumbing the UV return line into this cryptic sump and then back into the main sump? The UV will be powered by a separate pump right after the filter socks. The 40 w UV pump would be running around 400-500 gph.
Lately I have been thinking about Cryptic sump vs Refugium with Algae. My algae is not doing so hot Chaeto algae is slowly dying, but my cryptic sum is doing great, it is full of Aiptasia, pods and mushrooms. I have CB controlling Aiptasia, no worries here. The odd thing is my SPS coloring up nicely, and growth is good to great, I wonder if bio diversity is more important than algae for nutrient control.

In my opinion the simple answer is "yes". For systems that have lots of organisms that use nitrogen (particularly corals), having organisms that compete for organic compounds rather than inorganic nitrogen is a good thing. However, diversity in and of itself is not the end goal. The goal is to create diverse nutrient pathways, and a food web that benefits all the organisms that comprise them. A cryptic fuge can provide an environment for lots of organisms that contribute to the pathways and food web to help them grow. Additionally, and again in my opinion, there are easier and more controllable ways to deal with excessive nitrogen than relying on macroalgae.

I don't think a cryptic fuge will ever support the tank all by itself, but it will certainly believe it will contribute greatly to its overall success. I think a skimmer is a good counterpart and safety measure for systems that operate on a cryptic sump.

If I were to decide to employ a lighted fuge, it would contain clams, photosynthetic sponges, and soft corals that I didn't want in the display tank, rather than macroalgae.

This rock still amazes me. Never even saw this brain coral growing and still thriving.

Nope it’s been in the dark aside from room lighting for over 2 weeks. I’ll hack it off and throw it into the grow out tank tomorrow
Very cool. I know you started off planning a true cryptic sump but wasn't sure how it turned out.

I’ve been debating this back and forth still. I may just leave the lid off the tub and let it get overflow light from the tank but it’s deep enough that the bottom half of the rock won’t see light anyways.

I’ll be swapping all my corals from my 65 frag tank over to the new 160 tomorrow.
