I am thinking about adding a cryptic zone to my build but I have a few questions I hope you all could answer.

I am thinking of using a section of my sump or a dedicated 20 high tank. I could either place the cryptic zone or a fuge in either but I can't decide.

The first option is use the center section if my sump which is located after my skimmer as the cryptic zone. This section is aprox 12 gal. I would the t off my manifold pump and feed a 20 high as a fuge that will gravity feed into the cryptic zone.

The second option and the one I am leaning towards is use the 20 high as the cryptic zone and gravity feed it into the center section of the sump which will be the fuge.

I am really interested in opinions on these options.

Thanks in advance

I think there's little evidence on way or the other on benefits of cryptic zones, but I have three consisting of 44-gallon brute cans filled with live rock to about 6-12 inches from the top. Then I light the top for macroalgae. Obviously the macroalgae is doing something as it grows. I don't know about the cryptic part.

Note that those folks who are concerned about detritus will hate my setup as it collects inside of it and is never removed.

Thanks Randy I don't think I am overly concerned about detritus as long as it does not negatively effect the system on terms of NO3 or PO4. It will not be seen in my DT. Would there be much of a difference between using a 20 high vs a 10 gal tank!

Adding a cryptic zone tank to my system is one of the coolest things I've done to my tank in a long time. I have no idea whether it actually does anything beneficial for the overall system, but it is literally teeming with worms, copepods, Mysid shrimp and other critters. I get a kick out of watching them (note to self: you need to get out more !).

I used a 10 gallon tank for mine and regret that I didn't go with something larger.

Awesome I have the space for the 20h so I may do that. The 10 would give me space for my kalk reactor but I guess I can place that elsewhere. Any known down side to a cryptic zone???

Great read the cryptic zone is roughly 10% of the DT. This is interesting to me as I decide what size to go with.
