Crystal Sea Marinemix by Marine Enterprises International

I have not been able to find much about this salt at all, everything is pretty old but my LFS has started to sell it at a better price then Instant Ocean which I was using before for everything.

I found an article ( http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-03/rs/feature/index.php ) that is pretty interesting that is stating that Instant Ocean is MUCH more toxin (even though I know they are small levels) then the salt. It also shows that eggs were barely surviving in the Instant Ocean when the eggs in the Marinemix were surviving almost as well as natural sea water.

I find this very interesting and I was wondering if anyone has used this salt, what their opinions and experience are.

I want to see if I can find out anything else before I start using this salt in my SPS dominant system but it looks like this could be better then what I am using currently.

Killed over 50% of my sps tank about 15 or so years ago when Ron Shimek said it was the best thing ever. I only did a 5 gallon water change on I believe I had a 110 or125 at the time. They killed a ton of tanks back then. I hope things are better than back then.
If IO works well for you I wouldn't change.
Many of the biggest names in the business still use IO.

Yeah I will most likely just order IO online since my LFS doesnt have it, but I wanted to see if anyone was using this crystal sea salt at all still.

I have just read some bad things about SPS and this salt so sure seems like I am not going to give it a try

I used the stuff for many many years with no problems at all.

Polyfilter is standardized using this salt...'nuff said .

IMO, salt mix choice makes little to no difference to the success or not of a reef tank. Every one has pros and cons, and as long as you understand them, it can produce a great tank.

As to Ron's articles on the subject, he had a minimal understanding of chemistry and that was sometimes reflected in the conclusions he would draw.

With the widespread availability of ICP testing, folks can now determine for themselves whether trace elements are too low, too high, or just right.
