In my reading i have seen different numbers, 1 per gal, more, less, what’s the current thinking, thanks.

That's something you need to decide. I personally have in my 120 DT about 25 snails of assorted varieties, an emerald crab or 2, sandsifting sea star, 2 skunk cleaners, 1 blood red shrimp, 2 conch, 10 nassarius, and zero hermits. I dislike hermits and refuse go put them in my tank. I have a very low maintenance tank. Some people love more crabs, and less snails, but I think it's all personal preference. Do what works for you.

I would go for quality vs quantity. Find out what specific types of algae the snails, crabs, etc target. Less is more here. You don’t want them to starve off. Hope this helps!

Always go about lower than what most say and then increase later if need to.

From my personal experience for algae Trochus Snails 1 for about 15-20 galoons will do. They are amazing. I had 2 in a 50 gallo nand to combat the initial algae phase I got 3 more. In 3-4 days all the algae gone and no algae in tank. I now need to throw away few and only keep 3 of them.
Imo if you have a decent sand bed about 2-3 Nassarius Snail will also be enough.
Increase after. Don't let your CUC die off to starvation and make more algae.
