My 65g tank is about 7 weeks old and I'm using turbo snails and crabs for the CUC. I was wondering if there is something different I could use other then the crabs. They're doing a great job, but they seem to be like a pack of wild dogs. When a snail falls off the wall and lands upside, there's about twenty of them tearing him apart. I also believe they took out my Royal Gramma slowly while he was asleep in the rocks. :squigglemouth:
Any input would be appreciated.

I have found that mixing snails and crabs can get to be a bad mix. I usually try to keep only red leg crabs with my snails since they are herbavores. Of course you can still run into a problem if they want to find another shell to live in. Then they will take any opportunity available to take down some of your snails. Just my opinion on this subject, but I'm sure others will chime in on their experience too!

I just use a good mix of different types of snails (nassarius, cerith, trochus, conches) and go crabless. I have had nothing but issues with hermits.

I have always gone with big zebra turbos and little blue leg hermits.....my favorite combo. Maybe I should watch my hermits a little closer:) I also like the big tongan Nassarius snails for sand sifting, but they need to be fed.

I just had some crabs eat a new Duncan coral. I got it two days ago and it was opening slowly while adjusting to my tank. They just climbed it and started digging it out. That's one fish, three turbo snails, and a coral. These guys have to go!
