Culture pods from the tank?

The water that drains off the algae when I clean my algae filter has some pods-not a boatload but they are there. Just wondering if anybody has tried culturing pods from the tank.
I'm going to setup a 6 or 7 gallon generic pod culture in a 10 gallon tank and feed it Spirulina, just to see if anything develops.
