Hello all!

Long time ago i had great success with culturing phyto, and now i think its time to repeat that ;)

Only problem, in all of shops available, no such thing as starter culture. Previously i used home made phyto to start my production, but that also is not available anymore.

So i wonder can i use bought phyto in bottles, something like nyos, microbelift, aquaforrest, etc, and start culture using that, and plant fertilizer i used before?

Will it work?

Thanx!

It most likely won't work. Most of those phyto in a bottle solutions are made for feeding but they don't provide a live phyto culture. You have to make sure they sell it as "live".
You can use something like Ocean Magic which is live phyto but it's a mix of different strains so whichever dominates in the culture will outcompete the others and eventually your culture will just be that one type of phytoplankton so it's more ideal to culture them seperate.

Check amazon for Mercer of Montana. They usually have starter cultures available. I bought a bottle each of their tetra and nano back in 2020 and am still going off of the same starter culture. I just shake it in the fridge occasionally and make more when I run low.
EDIT: I just realized your from croatia. I don't know if Mercer of Montana is available out that way. If any local reefers culture their own, that might be a better option.

Lots of online places to order the culture that you want. I just ordered iso galbana and am currently culturing it.

A quick Google search will yield multiple options.

Like i said main problem is gettin any live culture, yes, many shops have it, but shipping is big problem....

Sadly, not all of us are in usa....
I do agree it's a bit more difficult outside of the US, but it's definitely not impossible with a little digging. That said, while I haven't done much looking for suppliers out of the US, there's one place I know of in Australia that ships worldwide according to their site, and - while somewhat pricy - they have a good range of phyto species available to culture:

Mercer of Montana baby!!!!!!

One European seller who states that they ship to the EU (they're lab oriented, so they're relatively expensive):

Other sellers/distributors closer to you than Australia who might be willing to ship to your location (most of these are distributors for Reed Mariculture):
There's also https://stavrasaquatic.com/ in Cyprus - the website isn't up yet, but they have a phone number you can search and call.

You also might be able to order from http://floridaaquafarms.com/shop/microalgae-disks/ (I've seen a place in the UK selling their disks), but I'm not entirely sure.

There are probably a number of other sellers in Europe that I'm not aware of, but these are the ones I was able to find (almost all of them have English sites or an option for an English site - such as the French one above - so that makes them a lot easier for me to find). If you're able to search with some of the European languages, you're chances of finding a store that would work for you would likely be higher.

As mentioned above, though, you will likely have to pay a hefty amount to get your culture going due to your location (unless you find a local reefer willing to sell/give you some to start with).

Best of luck!

Putting my phyto culture kit together. Will these white lids work? So much cheaper putting the kit together yourself. The led's below are only $15 shipped each

Two jars, led flood light 10w, two straws, some tubing and air pump...

Total cost probably around 10 cents....

And this is exactly what one get with 100$ "phyto culture kit".. ;)

This is a great live stream with dong Zou, on reef bum, he shares some good information and around 1:17:00 they talk a little about dongs phyto cultures he gives some great ideas through the whole video check it out

Those white lids should work great. They better because I just ordered something very similar. I'll be putting together my culture setup over the next week or so.

Good luck and keep us posted.
