i am currently treating my fish for an ich breakout with cupramine. The fish have been in the cupramine for at the recommended level .5 for a week now. Today I just noticed that my clown is developing Popeye. He has a slightly cloudy eye and it is bulging just a hair out. Am I safe to treat this bacterial infection with furan2 while using cupramine? Is there something else that I can use to treat the bacterial infection while treating with cupramine?

Thanks.

Secondary bacterial infections are common in fish with preexisting parasitic infestations. You can use just about any antibiotic, including Furan-2, in conjunction with copper. However, let's be certain this is indeed a bacterial infection you are dealing with here. Popeye in both eyes usually denotes infection; but if it's just in one eye that typically means an injury has occurred.

Keep up water quality and make sure properly fed a vitamin rich diet and he should recover from the eye injury nicely

^^This, if the "popeye" is just in one eye. You can also dose Epsom salt @ 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons to help relieve the swelling. This is safe to use with copper.

I took out a couple of cups of tank water and dissolved the Epsom salt and then slowly added the mixture into a high flow area tonight. I figure I have roughly 25 gallons of water so I did 5 tbsp of Epsom salt.

I did observe that my clown and goby Abe no interest in eating. Hopefully they are hungry tomorrow. I will add an additional drop of garlic tomorrow to try and promote them to eat.

I was impatient and fed a little more food last night and let it soak in the garlic for a bit. The clown went after a few very small pieces but the goby still hasn't eaten for a few days. Any ideas on how to promote him to eat so he doesn't starve to death?

Also, how long should I do the cupramine treatment? The bottle says 14 days, but I have read things online that say you should go 30 days. I plan on keeping everyone in QT for the full 8 weeks after the treatment. I just want to make sure that everyone makes it to the 8 weeks.

How is your ammonia level? When I treat with cuprimne I did the recomended treatment, then slowly lowered the copper by 5
gal water change per week.

I have been doing 5 gal water changes every 2-3 days to lower the ammonia level. They are a serious pain having to match the temp, salinity and the cupramine levels.

Ya thats the hard part!!! I even had a well seeded magmnum filter, and the copper must of took its toll on the bacteria. I did 50% water changes twise, about 5 days apart, then things got back to normal. Hope all goes well.!!!

The problem with copper based meds is appetite suppression can be a side effect. Most handle it fine, but there's always going to be that oddball fish who just can't tolerate being in copper. Eating less is fine, like what your clown is doing, but when a fish stops eating altogether then that is a problem. That means you've likely encountered a copper sensitive fish and an alternative treatment is needed for him. Personally, I would pull the goby out of copper and run him thru TTM using a couple of buckets: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/tank-transfer-method.192655/
