Cupramine overdozing - Clown tang almost died.
30G QT initially with 0.4 PPM cupramine. I added 2ML and it shot up to 0.65 PPM. I thought they could handle it. Clown tang did not. So, I took him out into a bucket of freshly mixed saltwater. 5 mins later, he got back up. I changed water and brought the cupramine down to 0.25 PPM and put him back in. He is fine now. Hope no permanent damage.
Glad I just got the Hanna Copper checker. The seachem tester (blue strip) sucks. I could never tell the shade of blue.

Good choice on the Hanna Checker! I swear I was color blind trying to figure out where my copper was on their spectrum before getting the Hanna. QT life is so much easier now.

Yeap, too low and you can't kill the velvet or ich. Too high you kill the fish. I was told cupramine stays in water like salt so it never changes but I was wrong. It can get absorbed by rocks and sands (in my case, sponges?) so it needs to be tested often. At least I now have a tester I can trust.
Now the dilemma is if I dose higher, clown tang can't handle it. If I dose less, velvet and ich could still be there.
Fishkeeping is so much fun, isn't it.

once i made the switch to copper power and a hannah checker its so much easier. so much room for error and still be in the therapeutic range

I’m currently QT’ing a couple wrasses and I was worried about their tolerance to copper exposure but with the Hanna it’s so easy to walk the line of copper

.5 is the sweet spot for cupramine. .65 shouldn’t be that deadly to a tang, although individual fish have different tolerances.

I started using copper power after reading that so many members prefer it over cupramine. I've used it through the QT of several fish now and love it. It seams to be a lot more gentle and I haven't had issues with loss of appetite like I did with cupramine. And yes, the Hannah copper checker is a must in my opinion. I'd gladly spend $50 again the second something happened to mine.
