I have a bunch of the white dry/dead rock to use in my 125g mixed reef build. For a long time, the people of BRS and others have said there's no reason to cure the rock. I just watched one video of a reefer channel that he had to cure his rock as his tests showed high amonia, nitrite and nitrate, like it was shipped live rock. I don't think,....he tested phosphates, but he may haved.

I have not watched other videos other than this one, or called anyone yet, I guess because I'm a little shocked.

I was only planning on giving all of my rock a good rinse, not going through a whole cycle.

I also haven't tested my rock, but I will now !

Why would his test show these and why would BRS, say no need to cure this type of rock ?

Remember BRS sells different forms of dry rock. I believe they say that reef saver is good to go. It would be prudent to stick some in RODI and see if it leaches PO3 and or nitrates.

I used another kind of dry rock. It leached phosphates. Knowing what I know now, I should have cured it for at least a month. It would have saved me having to fool with multiple GFO applications, carbon dosing, and water changes to get things under control. Still going through that drill was a decent learning experience.

I would think that good to go depends on your application. If you are going to run fish only or soft corals, maybe some nutrient leaching could be a good thing. If you are going to run an ultra low nutrient system, it would be prudent to cure the rock first.

Like I mentioned, I'll have to test the rock, especially phosphates.
I wonder why the one brand, has high levels vs other types that look the same ?

I'll give BRS a call tomorrow and ask questions.
