Is there any reason why I should use RO water to make the salt water for curing dry rock? I have some pukani dry rock that I plan to cure for about a month. It has been soaking in a bleach bath for a little over a week now.

You may get a both answers with regards to use or not use. Having just done this I opted to use RI/Ro water primarily because I cycled inside the tank. All pressure washing, bleach soaking, and dosing of lanthanum chloride was done outside in tubes using plain tap water. Once everything was done I moved it into the house, aqua scape, then filled with ri/ro. I also added a metric tone of dechlorinator just to be safe because I used bleach. Anyway if in the tank I would use ri/ro. If outside in tubs or what have you I would just use tap water and dechlorinate it.

Did you use RO water for the bleach bath?

No I did not. I didn't use RO to hose the rock down so I assumed it would be the same for the bleach soak. now I am about to do the cure and again see little reason to use RO. Oh I forgot to say that my tap test around 50ppm TDS. I think I am going to go with tap for everything until I move the rock to the tank.

If you know your tap water has no or very low phosphate, go for it. The problem is that most tap comes with phosphates.

I used tap water and used dechlorinator to remove the chlorine from the water when i cured my pukani rock. You are going to be doing 100% water changes every coupe of days at the beginning sand about 50% every few days after that. The pukani is going to definitely leach some stuff out. I then placed s small bag with Phosguard in the bin to absorb the phosphates being released so the rocks didn't absorb it. Make sure you hear the water to around 85 degrees... the warmer water helps break down the organics a little quicker. I cured the rocks in freshwater for 6 weeks... probably should have done it longer! But, i didn't do that initial bleach bath like you are doing... that should help breakdown alot of the organics already.

Im not knocking the use of RODI water for this, but I don't think its necessary. I can't make it that fast since i have low house water pressure... and you will need to replace it often at the beginning... seems like a waste to me.
