Breaking down one of my tanks and I plan to use the rock later on. Can I just let the rock dry out which everything on it will die off, then just cure it to get it ready for use again?

Without giving it the acid bath, would it just take longer to cure since there will be organics on it?

You can remove organics tossing the rock into water and then adding a few cups of bleach. The bleach will oxidize the organics. Rinse well and dry the rock.

Rock can absorb phosphates. Adding muriatic acid will peel off a layer of rock. If you have never had a phosphate problem, you don’t need to do this.

What is the condition of the rock and how much later do you plan on using?
If in the next year or so and it's in clean shape, I'd try and get a barrel for it and just keep it wet. Just a pump and room temp would be enough.

If it's longer and or you have algae issues I would acid wash then soak in RO/DI then dry out. I did this with some algae covered rock and when I went to use it I just rinsed it quick and it had no issues going forward. Personally I do prefer live rock that was always live vs dry rock but it is much more practical to store rock dry.
