Anyone use purigen by seachem in there tanks? What’s your results in doing so? I always used it in all my fresh tanks but never salt I happened to read it was for either fresh or salt just looking for input guys thanks!

I Have used it before and it is what it says it is but I quit using it as I found out easier to get my biofiltration right and export nutrients via microalgae . Don't use carbon either. That being said if I end up having Coral war problems then I might just start using purigen or carbon again. Probably carbon easier for me to renew using peroxide and the oven and don't have to worry about washing bleach out of my filter media.

I’ve got high phosphates and high nitrates 0.5 phosphates and 40-80 ppm nitrates

Purigen uses alu.inum oxide balls.. ive heard it could have negative effect on your corals.. i just stick to regular activated carbon... purigen is great for fresh water in removing tannins but i see no point in salt water.

Or am i thinking of phosgaurdfor the aluminum balls. Yes probly got it mixed up but still

Tbh id rather be at .5 then near 0 where im at... its hurting my corals and they grew better with higher phosphates...

Id honestly just .ake a little canister using seachem matrix or denitrate.

I actually have a 3 liter homemade canister running at 26gph stuffed with denitrate... and i have a 135g with 65 corals.. 4 tangs.. 1 foxface. 3 damsels. 2 clowns. 2 dwarf angels.. i feed 2 to 3x flakes a day and 1 or 2 oeices of nori sheets and my nitrates never go above 20.. usually always 5-10ppm.

In fact i havent done a water change in 3 months.. but i got stupid firgetting about magnesium and trace elements other thrn alk and calcium lol so i forgot water changes arent just for nitrates haha

My api reef kit reads .5 I think lol

.5 is crazy high. If it’s .05 you’re good to go. I’d run GFO if you’re at .5.
As for purigen, I run it in a reactor in my Acro tank. I notice absolutely no difference when I do. I’m simply using it up at this point and will not re-purchase.

.5 is fine...all itll do is make algae grow.. if you got a proper cleanup crew you shouldnt have to worry zbout it.

Just saying..

The only thing two ways I know to get rid of phosphates and nitrates of consequence are water changes or plants. Some can be done via excellent bacterial filtration and skimmer.

I don't like water changes and like a little extra challenge in my eco hobbies so I use plants. However will have to dose Trace elements.

I’m running an asm g2 200 gallon skimmer it pulls almost a cup in less than a week lol

Micro algae is how most nutrient imbalance is taken care of in nature and in your tank. Grow it where you want it and it won't grow where you don't. Only thing that closes the loop on the nitrogen cycle is plants. I like turf scrubbers but there are different ways.

Look around on YouTube and you will find several large reefs running no skimmer no carbon no sock just turf scrubber and live rock
