Custom 230 Peninsula Build

Nice tank and sump! Also like the rockwork... very open and natural which will allow for lots of growth and swimming room! well done sir, worth the wait!
. Thanks!! We added some more rock today but it is still very much open for future growth of acros! I also like all the space for the fish to swim. Photos will be forthcoming shortly!

Here are a couple quick pics. Enjoy!!:bigsmile:

It looks FANTASTIC!!!!

Jackie
Thanks Jackie!! It turned out better than I could have imagined with lots of room for coral expansion. I need to give special thanks to the team (Jen-Owner and Travis-Manager) of New Wave Aquaria who did the complete install based on my rough conceptual sketch, while I "supervised" them. If you are from the Minneapolis area, you must check them out!

Well it turned out just wonderful! I'll bet you're so glad that chapter is over and can just relax and finally enjoy your tank :)

just popped back in to check out the thread - A LOT has happened since I last visited. Congratulations on getting everything set up and it does look fantastic! Love everything about it! Superb job!

Thanks for popping back in and reading about all the progress. I appreciate your compliments about the build and hope to continuing "building" the reef with corals!

Hey Tim! It's been almost a week, how is the tank doing? I'm wonding how the cycling is going with your rock and corals coming from another tank. I have to say, I am a little nervous about this with mine when I do the switch from the 125 to the 180. Did you use anything to help it along?

[/ QUOTE]
Thank you! This I think is very true choice, favor the predictability of outcomes. I am glad that you have not set fashionable now diodes.
And yes, setting the MP60 you can optimally organize the cross section in the tank.
Success.

Jackie - I was concerned about this too and so I have been testing most parameters daily and to my surprise and relief the nutrient levels have remained really constant as follows:
NH3= 0.0
NO2 =0.0
NO3 =3 to 4
PO4= 0.08 to 0.12
I have also only seen a slight browning in some areas of the sand bed. I do add about 60 ml of MB7 once every week.

That is great news! Did you acclimate your corals as if they were new also? I was thinking of using all the water I can save from the 125 too. This way, other than the new sand bed, it might react like it got a large water change. I have MB7 and Bio Spira but debating on which to use.

Well I’ve encountered my first set of bad luck on my new build. My rainbow wall hammer and one head of my frogspawn were lost to Brown Jelly Disease. This was my first experience with this issue and I was surprised at how quickly the corals deteriorated. To make matters worse while I was going through this, a thunderstorm hit town and took out our power. It was only for a couple hours and did notaffect the tanks, but when the power came back on my Apex display module was shot and would not power up. Thankfully the Apex system itself still works and I can control it through the network, but I have lost the local control which was quite convenient.

I never like losing livestock and am always interested in what happened to cause any issues so I did some research on BJD. From my understanding, the onset of this disease(bacterial) is triggered by an injury to the coral. Based on my observations, I think one, or a combination, of the following three scenarios could have caused an injury to the corals:

1.)Recent transit from the LFS to the new tank.
2.)Torch coral was fairly close and depending on how far their sweepers extend beyond their normal extension could have stung them.
3.)Clown fish swimming in and around them.

The first scenario is fairly obvious as anytime a coral is moved and/or transported damage can occur. The second scenario I have some doubts with as the torch seems to be far enough away and the one head of the frogspawn affected was the furthest of the three heads away from the torch. The closer two heads are still doing fine. The third scenario is the most interesting to me as if it was the cause, it occurred due to a positive thing that happened to my RBTA. My two clowns and their RBTA were transferred into my new build and were located next to the euphyllias. Only four days after the transfer to the new tank, the RBTA split. After the split, one of the RBTA relocated to the other side of the tank along with one of the clown fish. The other clownfish seemed lost and could not find the remaining RBTA which was small and moved into a rock crevice. The lost clown fish then swam into the hammer, frogspawn and torch trying to seek out comfort which could have caused injury to the polyps...

Things appear to be back to normal and I am happy to say that the clowns have reunited back into one of the RBTA. All other coral and fish appear to be healthy so I will continue and monitor.

Anyone else experience BJD and have any theories on why it occurs?

With the MH and T5 combo, I was getting temperature deltas of between 3 ½ to 5 degrees (77 to 82F). I run the T5s for 10 hours and the halides for 4 hours. I managed to squeeze in some ducting in the floor joist from my HVAC to poke into the canopy. This, along with raising my heater temp to 78F, has reduced the temperature swings to around 2 degrees (78F to 80F). In the winter I will have to block off the duct to avoid blowing in heat and will then likely run a fan. I also have two bathroom exhaust fans venting outside that switch on one hour before the halides come on and stay on one hour after the halides shut off. I am trying to avoid buying a chiller, which I have heard can have temp fluctuations of up to 2 degrees anyway depending on the size and placement for ventilation/dissipation of the heat.
