I just ordered my 240 72x30x25 today from glass cages. I have a question on overflow boxes and drain sizes. Originally I was planning on a modular marine 1800gph external overflow box. Unfortunately their website says they’re not taking orders right now. So my next 2 choices would be the Fiji Cube 20” 2000gph or an EMS 20”. I really like the EMS 20” but I have two concerns. One is the shape of their weir. They use 1/2” slots instead of the traditional teeth. I am worried about fish or other creatures getting into the box. My second concern is that the drain size is only 1” as opposed to the Fiji cube 1.5 inch. Is 1” sufficient on a 240? They make a 32“ overflow with 1.5 drains but my tank will be 4 side viewable. Rear will be visible from fish room. I don’t like the idea of taking up almost half the rear glass with the overflow and restricting the view by that much. I should add that for now I will be using a trigger 39 sump At least for the first few months. I know I should have bigger, but it’s what I have right now. The drain intakes on the sump are only 1” so if I opt for the Fiji cube because of the 1.5 inch drains I’ll be limited by the bulkheads on the sump.

Have you looked at synergy reef? They would be my second choice after MM.
I thought about synergy especially since glass cages stocks them but there’s a lot of mixed reviews for them and I’m not a fan of the injection molded plastic.

Another idea is to have 2 Fiji cube 800 or 1200 boxes. One on either side of the tank. I’d have to ask glasscages if that kind of set up is possible with their tanks.

I would personally go for the EMS 32". The internal box is only a few inches tall and is located across the top of the tank. Having the extra surface skimming will be appreciated down the road. I never had a fish go through the weir on my EMS, though it is not impossible.

Thanks. I am leaning in that direction. I was really hoping to keep the back wall more open to viewing.
