Custom sump question

Hi, looking for ideas for a custom sump. I built the stand/tank, but the tank supports are in the way for just a large rectangular normal sump. So I need to break it down into 2-3 separate sections. I was thinking of just fitting whatever glass tanks I can fit and plumbing them together with bulkheads. Would need to think through bulkhead positioning to not do something stupid. Any other ideas? Thanks

in your situation, I feel like I'd prefer to have a narrow long custom sump that can fit in front of or behind the center supports. Having plumbing between sump sections kinda scares me in case anything ever gets clogged, sounds like a flooding disaster. Nice stand build, by the way, looks very sturdy! Curious though, why did you decide on the center supports? Generally, substantial corner verticals and edge horizontals up to can support just about anything, and of course you can add vertical supports around the perimeter places other than the center?

That's a complex issue to solve.

Assuming those center supports are mandatory, I would consider going with 2 different heights with the glass tanks so the preliminary tank can gravity feed into the second one via bulkhead and plumbing.

You won't need to drill both tanks in that situation and you won't need to worry about any plywood sag breaking one of the sumps through the pvc connection to one another (if the bottom plywood isnt well supported)

Hi, there are center supports because I wasn't sure if the 30" width needed it or not and the tank is 84" long. The entire stand is built out of 2x6s and I'd rather over build, but if you guys think that is too much I would happily get rid of the center supports.

The plywood on the buttom is supported by 2x6s 16"OC across the length of the stand. It's very supported, so no concerns there.

I know you’re not going to like this answer, but you will be living with your tank and sump for years. You’ll be adding and removing gear from the sump and changing configurations over time to handle new requirements.
I would find a way to add steel tube. They are strong will allow you to remove most of the vertical supports that are in the way.
I know that rebuilding isn’t ideal but you’ll thank me in a couple years.

Thank you. I already started looking at them last week as I'm familar with that product. I reached out, but they were unsure if they could handle the config I proposed. I may just buy one reservoir tub and see if it will work with my RM1200 and go from there. A definite possibility.

They work great for me, love that they are modular and indestructible. But, i don't have the space issues that you have.

Probably not. Remove and slide in from the side. If you're worried about the center braces not being there beef up the ends so you don't need the center braces.

Yes; I agree.

I had the same problem with a stand I made for a 6 ft tank. I was able to slide a 33long in through the side because there were no center braces.

I'd look in to removing them.

In this hobby, there will always be configuration changes. A customers sump to fit in that space will only complicate this.

Yup,, just pull the braces. the 2x6’s will support it. Gusset it if need be.

Ok fine...middle supports are out and now this has become easier...but whatever, I like a challenge.
