Hello!!

I'm currently in the middle of designing a sump/refugium to be added to my 40 gallon marine land cube and could use some help!!!!

Since it's very difficult finding any cube sump/refugium around 20" X 20" (WXL) I decided to design my own layout in a 20" X 18" X 20" tank.

Attached is a rough first draft design of the sump.

If anyone can chime in as to whether this should work or could be a nightmare, please let me know!! Anything I may be overlooking like baffle height and overflowing, to anything else.

The attachment can seem a little confusing at first, but with a quick explanation it's pretty clear.

The upper left part of the image is a detailed explanation of the flow/layout from an above viewpoint.

There's 4 main compartments.

The first (lower left corner) is where the drain runs into the sump where the first compartment is a bunch of bio-balls being whipped around (via small pump) so no detritus/debris accumulates. This section will have water running 15" high where it will flow down into the refugium where the water level will be 12" (compartment 2).

In the refugium the water will flow towards two baffles in the middle of the sump where there is a large filter pad in the middle of them. The water will flow over the right baffle, through the pad, and under the left baffle into the skimmer/heater area (compartment 3) running at 8" high (optimum water level for skimmer).

From, here water will go through a three baffle bubble trap into the final compartment (4) where simply the return pump awaits.

In the bottom right corner of the attached image is a sideways view trying to show the design from another perspective.

I'm looking to make the move on overhauling my set up this weekend. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

-Mark

Doesn't look to bad you will want to move your skimmer to one of the chambers before your fuge. I have been given conflicting info on the use of bio balls but the other guys maybe able to expand on that.
