Why not just leave it full-height and elevate your egg crate to the level you want? Or even multiple levels? PVC legs would be much easier to fabricate than Taking an aquarium aquarium apart and reassembling it. Plus, you'd have lots of room under the racks for bio media if you were to run it without a sump.

no I'm gonna be tearing it into parts and taking the sheets over haha oh god I wouldnt even wanna be in the same building if they were gonna try to cut it whole... haha
That makes more sense.

Maybe he wants something portable to take to frags swaps

I'm working on setting up a dorm room frag tank and my college is limiting me to a 30g display tank.. I have a thread on here where I'm showing the progress as I plan everything :)

This is a 40 breeder that I stripped down the glass panels and trimmed it down due to a crack in the old overflow drill hole. It is probably around your 30 gallon mark

Also forgot to say I just had to do it the hard way with a diamond glass cutter from Lowes. I had the college budget also but had to do it on a college apartment balcony!

dang... I'm aiming for a $500 budget so I hope I can hit it... so far so good >:)

Petco has their dollar per gallon sale and a 20 long and a couple glass baffles and some silicone 1 BOOM sump. Loop hole its two separate tanks and each is less than 30 gallons....instant frag tank haha @Jisko

my only problem is the space honestly I've been debating that idea and then reworking the stand. Here is a little look at the design I've come up with. the sump would be 15x15x12 cube where the return and overflow connect at the same side of the overflow. It would be similar to the trigger overflow cube. Then on the left the ATO would be setup along with components. The biggest problem im running into is staying in budget but keeping space open for upgrades. By upgrades I'm talking about reef cam, apex unit, tunzu ATO and what ever else. My budget is only small to start because I work part time during the summer while I'm home from college and I don't work at all while I'm at college. However I do have extra money that I can spend on this project but if I go overboard I'll hear a lot of nagging from the family so its more of a start small go all out down the road kind of thing. Plus I'm looking at $500+ in corals so I want the setup to look really nice and not look like I put it together with some duck tape and super glue haha

I just did this to a 55g about a year ago to make a sump to go under a 120. I agree the hardest part was removing that top plastic rim. Try to not mangle this piece you can reuse it to hide any imperfections of the glass not snapping perfect. Once u get that off its all about a simple clean straight line score. Cut the silicone down to your score line before you attempt to snap the glass. The glass cutter I used was a red one with the ball on the end. Once u score the glass just tap sharply along the score line with the glass cutter ball side. It will help start to snap the glass all the way through. Once you see it snap all the way through edge to edge you can begin to apply even pressure by hand to the piece of glass and it should snap clean. I started with the short end sides of the tank first(depth). Just watch some YouTube videos on cutting glass. I seen one video of a guy cutting curves out of glass which totally inspired me to attempt to cut a couple of straight lines. Good Luck!

Just looked it up and a 20g long is 30 inches long which only gives me 6 inches on the side of it. This leaves me with a problem because i'd really have no space because both sides of the stand are going to need to be 4 inches inwards. Hard to describe so I made a little diagram of what I mean below. I could move the gadgets to the back wall above the sump but leaves no room for ATO or dosing setup if its required down the road :\

the grey is a 2x4.... 2 for each corner then the sump is 30x12 and yeah the photo is to scale :\

reuploaded photo as I sized sump wrong

This is an enormous amount of time, effort and expense for a $40 tank. I suggest you use it as is. Have you ever put a tank together from scratch? It is not as easy as you think all of the silicone must be done in one shot or else it will leak.

I've built two sumps but thats about it. The purpose behind using the breeder is because even after paying to have it cut and put back together its only gonna cost around $80. If I was to buy a 36x18x9 frag tank I'm looking at $300+

But why do you want to cut it? Why not just fill it 1/2way?

looks sloppy and it will be weight to carry that I don't really wanna deal with. It's also half the size if I cut it

OK - so no real good reason to do it :). Why not just say I'm bored and want to see if I can do it? lol - good luck with it (seriously). I really want to see it if it gets done. 40b's are so thin that I will be very surprised if you are even able to take it apart without breaking a pane.
