So I have been battling with cyano for a couple weeks now and can't seem to get rid of it.. It's a 20 l with 2 aquaclear hob filters and a 65 gallon skimmer and and tried the 3 day blackout and did not help. I do not have a phosphate test kit do I do not know what it is at bug my nitrates are at 20ppm and ammonia at.50 I know I have some dead spots for flow and am correcting that but did not know how people have got it under control??

Eww. You should not have any ammonia. Zero.
This is telling me something is wrong with your biofilter bacterial population. The cyano is doing what the cycle should.
Get some bottled bacteria in there asap.
Find the sources of this prob.
What water are you using? Rodi?
And dead or missing snails?

I only use Rodi water and I have some bacteria that I will start dosing today. How can I lower my phosphates? Like I said I don't have a test kit for it but I assume it's high.. That's why I have the cyano and nitrates are high too. I just can't seem to get the nitrates under control I also have a fluval 406 canister that I have laying around I might hook up with marine pure balls only

The first best thing is a good biofilter to lower the nutrients. With the high ammonia I would say that for some reason it's broken.
Bacteria eat No and Po. That's why carbon dosing works to lower them. Nopox for Po is carbon dosing btw.

I'd have to say you need to figure out if or what has stalled your cycle. That's usually a bleach or chem contamination from bad tap water. I'd say first look at you rodi with a tds meter. If you rule out chem contamination it's has to be something dead in there.
If you do have a can fill it up with floss and run a more aggressive carbon dose and many a gfo to get whatever it is out.

And def get the bacteria in there. I'd say to please test ammonia again to rule out error or have the lfs test it to confirm.

I would personally do a lot of water changes to try and drop your ammonia, nitrates, and phosphates. If your tank is around 5.5 gallons it seems like a 1 gallon water change every day, or every other day, should help out a lot. Once you start getting your ammonia and nitrates under control I'd suggest getting a good phosphate test kit. I have had a lot of success with the Hanna phosphate checker. You can pull phosphates out of the tank with GFO, but it is hard to know if you are effectively removing the phosphates if you don't have a good way to check for them.

Do you have a lot of fish in your tank?

I will test again and do a water change the bottle said 30ml for 20 gallons.. Seems a bit much and there are only 3 fish and 8 soft corals but the power head I have is only rated for 240gph so I'm going to get another one I found it's a hydor 425 with a controller I would post pics but it keeps telling me failed to upload

After doing a 10 gallon water change yesterday my ammonia is at .25 and nitrate at 5.0ppm will do another 5 gallon change tomarrow I just need to get rid of this algae it's starting to grow up the side of my Kenya trees

What are you running in the Aqua clears? How often do you clean those?

A 30 gallon and a 20.. The 20 just fried 2 days ago so have to get another one or I will just run the canister and the 30 so that will give me 130 gallons of filtration and I clean those once a month

What do you think about the water flow.. The power head I have is only rated for 245

It seems like if I have ever had a really bad Cyano problem it will grow regardless of the flow. I will go around with a turkey baster and blast it off what ever its growing on a couple times a day.

When you get your water chemistry closer to "ideal conditions" you might want to try Chemiclean or Red Slime Remover to get rid of the Cyano. It has helped me in the past but only when I get my water to a decent level.

Good luck! I battled Cyano for about 6 months... it almost made me quit reefing. It turns out the live rock I got off craigslist was dumping tons of phosphate into my tank.

Thanks I'm ordering a phosphate test kit tonight and I will set up my canister with media only to see if that helps with some gfo

Keep in mind you didn't find the source of the original prob. It's not normal for this to happen.
Keep up the changes and monitor the Am to make sure it doesn't rise again. Indicating the problem is stil there.
If you use bacteria test first and then add bacteria.

Has anything recently died and how old is amonia test kit?....and the flow may or may not have affect on cyano but it will affect bacteria.

Vinigar dosing is a great cheap way to help boost bac t.

Nothing has died in months and the only thing that died was a coral I've never had any fish die and it's been running for 2 years and I've never had this problem
