Per the title, every time I’ve tried using reef energy A and B I get patches of cyano. Any ideas why?

Nutrient imbalance? That’s when I’ve seen cyano pop up.

I would think so, too, but it’s been in two separate systems over the years with totally different nutrient levels. Right now I’m running ~5 nitrates and ~.05 Phosphate. No cyano whatsoever until I started dosing it (slightly under dosing) two days ago.

Do you need to dose it?

I only use it when I want to raise my phosphate.

Definitely not, but I’ve heard so many good things, and... I have it lol
Well, it’s obviously not good for you. One thing I’ve learned when starting to dose things: go 1/2 or 1/4 dose from what’s in the label for a bit, then increase as needed.

Yeah, good way to go about it. I did about a 1/2-3/4 dose. Maybe I’ll wait a week and try a 1/4 dose and see what happens.

It is supplying many different organic compounds that cyano will thrive on. If you tank has a predisposition to cyano, such an additive can make it worse.

Regular Salifert po4 tests? Po4 levels reliably rise when I use the product

Seems like an odd thing to put into such a product without mentioning it in the ingredients.

i wonder if the effect is indirect somehow.

Perhaps giving coral an alternate source for what po4 facilitates? If it doesn't need to uptake as much po4, it will be allowed to accumulate for a period.

Only phosphate will do what phosphate does. It might come in organic phosphates, but the ingredient does not specifically include those.
