I think I remember getting cyano to do that on the glass of a really low-flow system.

@Dan_P resonance patterns can appear in all sorts of environments, and organisms can orient themselves to take advantage of the local patterns of movement. (my best guess)

I think this pattern formed in a scum surface on top of the water in a test tank, and I scooped it onto a flat piece of plastic to take a picture.
