Cyano? It's mustard yellow.

Here, i had something similar some years ago (the yellow/green spots in the sand) minus the loss in corals.
The regular treatment against cyano did the trick, now i have normal cyano...
If you go this way it should not create bigger problems, just overskimming for a few days and a big water change (40%).
Good luck!

What was your 'regular' treatment for cyano? I've read Peroxide why's and why not's. Chemiclean why's & why not's. Red Slime Remover - same. I hear that cyano is related to nutrient levels (which ours are respectable even if not perfect) and we've read that nutrients have nothing to do with cyano. We don't even have consensus that this IS cyano... Your pics do reflect a very similar growth... and your tank remains beautiful. We've never had the SPS success that you do even though we do have a lot of purple coralline algae.

My regular treatment was either chemiclean or red cyano rx by blue life. Worth a try in your case.

hey one other thing that may help: todays probiotics for reefs are getting competitive

waste away, Brightwell stuff used to fight cyano are bacterial strains vs meds, this to me is cutting edge $9 options with no side effects other than the cost of a burger if they don't work. lots of other means have risk tradeoffs, todays probiotics do earn cures in work threads we can see from time to time. I haven't searched lately but things like dr tims waste away, newer cyano treatments that are probiotic are something to search for. there are ones claimed to fight dinoflagellate invasions as well we'd have to search though

I have the same green/yellow thing growing in my sand and can't seem to get rid of it with water changes/siphoning it out. Mine preferentially grows in the shaded areas of the sand. If you manage to kill it, let me know. None of my clean up crew will touch it either.

Matt, I'm following along to gain some knowledge. I'm just curious, how old is the system?

Hi guys, just noticed that the substrate is very clean. Are you sure you have enough nutrients in the tank? I’m wondering if you aren’t in a state where your bacteria population hasn’t switched from eutrophic to oligotrophic feeding?

Update: 85% improvement overnight with the Chemiclean. Skimmer is going crazy and everything is a mess from the air stone, but the yellow growth (with areas of red and black) and algae with micro bubbles is mostly gone with only a few significantly faded/ reduced areas. High hopes the progress continues and solution persists.

OK - 24 hours after Chemiclean, there is no visible trace of mustard yellow growth, green or black slime, and the the algae with micro bubbles is 98% gone. The skimmer continues to foam over and we still have an air stone going. All parameters are healthy / respectable.

Frogspawn is already out and 90% extended (as opposed to 40%). Monti has bright edges. Duncans & Torches look better. Let's get some stability back. We really want to grow some SPS.

Thank you guys for the counsel and suggestions.

You have all three.

Well... not anymore, but I'd like to keep it that way. My params were never out of whack. What did I do wrong? What can I do to keep these pests at bay? I can't believe it's just luck.
