Cyano or Dino’s

Hello I’ve posting this because I’m getting mixed comments on which outbreak my tank is going through, I’ve been told it’s Dino’s and also been told it’s Cyanobacteria

Dinos are brown and have bubbles. I'm not seeing much, if any dinos. I'm seeing cyano and hair algae.

I have to conquer with @nereefpat. It looks like Cyano and hair algae but then again in photo #2 and #3 there are some brown strings that look like Dinoflagellates. I imagine your not dealing with extremely elevated waste parameters and the issue is not yet completely out of control but certainly start attacking it all now.

A few of the control methods overlap for each and I imagine you should see a big difference after just following a few of the steps in the vids. Start by testing nitrate and phosphates and getting them back in balance, physically remove as much as possible on a regular basis, do your water changes and get some natural predators. Thanks Robert I’ve watched all the BRS supply videos and currently treating it as Cyano and hair algae currently running Chemiclean and it’s on 24 hours of its treatment. I have a question if it’s not cured by the 48hours should I treat it as Dino’s and switched back to chemi pure media bag and dose the Vibrant aquarium cleaner...

I have had great success with chemiclean against red slime . And it didn’t come back .
lately I had a medium case of Dino’s after my tank upgrade. Nutrients were in check 2-5 nitrates I didn’t check phosphate . I use algae on the viewing glass as a barometer. In short , if I have to use the magnet cleaner once every couple days then it’s got nutrients. Well just a little time took care of the Dino’s. I think the new tank upgrade disturbed them causing a bloom .

How often can you use chemi clean with detriment to your tank?

I only used 1 dose but I left it in for 3 days . It’s a sps tank to. You should turn off your white light as well cyano loves white and especially red lights. Get some turbo snails.

I looked at the pictures and I don’t see any cuc . Blue leg hermits are good for hair algae. I don’t see any turbo snails either. Get some Mexican turbos and trochus turbos. Figure about one CUC for every 3-4 gallons . Cut your white light , and get a tooth brush going to give your new CUC a head start .
And don’t rely on chemicals. So much . Ok run some chemiclean once . Then get the algae out . Also cyano loves rotting stuff like dead algae or ditritis. Good luck

My whites are at 8% I only increased it to take the photos..

I do have a clean up crew.
I have 3 Blue hermit crabs
1 Mexican turbo snail
1 Trochus snail
2 Nassarius snails

Your second picture looks almost identical to an algae battle that I just won. I looked back and cannot find a picture for the life of me. Mine basically looked like thick green algae covered with cyano. I think it is turf algae. Very tough compared to gha, grows in all the crevices. Hard to brush off even with a toothbrush. Do you have a refugium and if so, is anything growing there? I got to the point where my chaeto stopped growing and the DT algae took over in an impressive way. It was horrible. My nitrates were low like <1 and phosphates were low, some days 0, some days barely detectable. The problem was that the DT algae was consuming all the nutrients and outcompeting my chaeto. My plan was to increase nitrates and phosphates and clean the DT while the chaeto outcompeted the DT. At one point the chaeto and refugium algae were growing so I had algae in both my refugium and DT. I didnt care about the refugium algae. Eventually the DT lost to the refugium. 1-2 months later I have no algae on any of my rocks and only cyano on the sand that comes during the day and is gone at night. I did not use chemiclean, just added nutrients. Feeding did not bring anything up reliably for me so I dosed. Now my chaeto is growing like crazy again. I have no algae and worry about my snails as they seem sluggish. I did not increase my CUCs because I QT everything and so I could not just drop in more or else I would've. I have some snails in my QT but not sure what to do with them since my DT is clean. haha maybe they will go to the sump once they QT period is over.
