Cyano

How do i get rid or cyano ? I got pellets running, been doing weekly water changes, and have been trying to clean it off the sand bed and rocks but thats a losing battle. figured i would see a decrease in the cyano when i got the pellets going but looks as if it is growing more rapidly! what should i do?

Not sure how much pellets you are running but carbon dosing can feed cyano. You want to start out slow,
Also recommend a circulating biopellet reactor as you can adjust the flow in the Biopellets and the flow into the tank separately. If your cyano is getting worse I would advice to take out 1/4 - 1/2 of your pellets. If you can adjust you flow into the tank try dialing it back.

To combat my previous cyano issues I started dosing zeo coral snow with zeobak. How much nutrients you are getting into the tank? How much do you feed? . What are your water parameters? Especially Po4 and No3...

Cyano feeds off both NItrates and Phosphates. your pellets reduce each in a specific ratio, so if you have super high phosphates and zero nitrates, you wont remove the phosphates. Running small amounts of GFO in a reactor will help to reduce this. I have had it come and go in my tanks. I have a few trouble spots hanging on right now. I almost threw in teh towell a year and a half ago. it was pretty bad. persistance is the best way. Vacuum it out regularly to reduce its #'s.

I Run 500 ML on my 90 gallon aquarium and 20L sump. If was active carbon from mike. I run carbon and a very small amount of GFO in a BRS reactor.
I just did a test and the result where normal and good.
Salinity - 1.027
pH - 7.8
No2 - 0
No3 - 0
Ammonia - .25
Phos - .00
I have two AI sols 11" above the aquarium. Whites 50 % bues 55% royal blue 55%

Here are a few bad spots but its all over the sand bed.. Plus light just came on so it gets a ton worse by the time they go off. Lights on from 9-4 Ramp time of one hour.

If your cyano has increased its possible you are overdosing the pellets. I would advise you take a % out and see what happens in a week or two. Thats the problem I had running pellets, it was hard for me to dial them in correctly. It increased my cyano by double. Good readings but it's possible the bacteria/any algae you may have is using up No3 and Po4 giving you readings of 0. Even though your getting 0 readings it might still be getting feed. That was also the issue with my system. Not saying that's the case with your system but is very possible. I needed something to out compete the cyano for me it was dosing snow with bak. I have seen many run pellets with adding a bacteria source like zeobak or microbactor7. Others who are more experienced may chime in but I would advise this.

Kayler, your levels are super low, which is good.Now it comes down to flow. Seeing that the pics you are showing it seems most of it is in the corners of your tank. Do you have anything besides the one MP40 on the tank? And are you switching up flow intensity ?

I would highly suggest trying to add some beneficial bacteria to the tank. You can buy the stuff at Petco. It's called Microbe-Lift 'special blend'. By adding the good bacteria to the tank you will provide a balance that is missing. So basically the good bacteria that you are dosing will out compete the bad/cyano.

Only other flow is from my power head and yes I switch the mp 40 from reef Crest to wave maker ever few days. Been wainting to but another ph just been a little short on money and saving for swap

but I will definitely go to Petco today and get some of that stuff. It's def worth a try!

I've got a couple of koralias you can borrow for as long as you need to.

Warning! the bacteria stinks. Your gf is not going to be happy. LOL

I highly suggest dosing it right before you both leave the apt. for school, work, dinner etc.

Im wondering why your getting ammonia? You Shouldnt be as long as your tanks been up. I would also remove the gfo as you might have higher nitrates feeding the cyano because the pellets need use at a ratio 10:1 nitrates phos. What are u testing nitrates with? U can also try 3 days of darkness in your tank some people do this get rid of the last of it
