I've read a lot of posts and technical docs on the stuff. So what does this group say? I am seriously considering Blue Life Red Slime Rx. I am doing a 20 gallon change this weekend and have scrubbed spots on the rocks and vacuumed sand bed. I plan on scrubbing again on Friday night before the change. I am going to change the GFO which has been in 5 weeks now, change all filters and put the carbon sock back in the bubble trap. I see the phosphates starting to rise again. When I first put in phosban with GFO phosphates dropped to zero but have crept back up in the last two weeks. Now it’s showing up on my blue ridge coral. I turned off the 20k fluorescent and just running the 10k and 420 this week. Protein skimmer producing well. Any other ideas?

When my mg drops I get cyano. Might want to test that. That has been a big deal in my tank.

RO DI filters probably need a change. Even if your tds is reading 002ppm all of that could be nutrients feeding your bloom. Basically when DI resin breaks down one of the first components it loses its attraction to is po4. There are other easier components for the resin to bind up so it binds to them and the po4 is free to do its thing. Also running a higher k bulb in the display and a lower k bulb in your fuge can make a world of difference. Like 65k on the fuge and 20k on the display. they both peak at around 420-460nm which is where any photosynthesis is highest but the added yellow and red spectrum in a higher k bulb seem to fuel cyano and hair algae. Also bige is right about magnesium. Cyano has a harder time thriving in a magnesium rich environment. You sound like you know exactly what you need to do and are doin it. Its just gonna be a pain blasting it off the corals for a while til it gets under control. Good luck hope all goes well for you. Also here is a link to good cheap ro di replacement filters https://www.purewaterclub.com/catalog/index.php

make sure you have good water changing water test before you change, doing two changes a week with your scrubing an vaccuming, should do the trick, i know i fought this in my tank it took about 100 gallons water to stop completely, all the red slim removers do work, but unless you get to the root cause you never will stop it...( imo )
