ello R2R. I have had my tank running for approximately 9 months. I have had a cyano outbreak for a month now. I have been doing multiple water changes, but it seems like the day after it comes back. My thought was that my tank has alot of light from the outside hitting it, so I have a feeling that is the source of the problem. I will be putting some blinds up so that that problem will stop. I had all of my levels checked at my LFS and they stated all of my levels looked perfect. My corals are now not fully opening, and they seem distressed. I recently added a protein skimmer, but the tube to the pump must not be tight/bad tubing because its causing alot of bubbles all over my tank, and they stick to the glass/rocks/cyano/coral plugs. I was thinking of using chemiclean to remove it as I dont want my corals suffering from it.
'
A) do you think this is a good idea?
B) are the air bubbles from my protein skimmer hurting my tank?

A) chemiclean (erythromycin) work for Cyanobacteria- but they can come back.
B) ask 2 people for 2 different opinions. In my hospital tank I put extra air bubbles in the system for O2.
C) it is the baffles before the return pump that filters out bubbles soooo... you sure we are not talking Dinoflaggelates here? They grow extremely quick, they trap gas bubbles in their mucus. Any pics?

Thanks It looks different from what I feared...no bubbles on substrate. So yourbubbles truly seem to come out of the outlet. Unsightly, but not a problem. Check backwards for return pump pulling air or air going into baffles. If last, you need a foam filter between baffles.
Agree with Cyanobacteria. Chemiclean should work, but ultimately more flow would be preferred.

The bubbles are coming right from where the pump connects to the intake to the protein skimmer. I may just need to take it out and re connect it. Im glad to hear its not dyno. I have quite a bit of flow in my tank. The return pumps, the water movement from protein skimmer bubbles, and 2 power heads give quite a bit of flow, but may add another powerhead at some point.

+1 on Chemiclean. I had the same kind of outbreak in my first 6 months and never saw it again after 1 treatment of Chemiclean.

Oh well, The longer I do this hobby , the more I see this triangle Cyanobacteria-dinoflagellates-algae. It seem we navigate from one corner to the next...
