Well it was bumming me out too, so I got serious and used a product that I have not used in over a decade Chemiclean. I wish I had taken before and after images to share.
Cyanobacteria set in last summer, not too bad, but as winter went on it got progressively worse turning to a lovely (sarcasm) black cyanobacteria that spread all over the tank over the course of 3-4 days after removal.
Yes excessive nutrients did come into play but the usual interventions did nothing to stop the growth of this ugly scourge. Boy I wish I would have used Chemiclean earlier but I am stubborn and figured I could beat the cyano.
My personal experience with the product is just that my personal experience. Each individual must decide what is best for their unique situation. Follow directions explicitly, do not skimp on adding a supplemental source of 02. I used a simple air pump and a large air stone placed with the back compartments next to the pumps.
As first I was disappointed but the directions state it can take up to 48 hours for the product to work. After waiting 48 hours I removed the remaining cyano from rocks, glass, corals and vacuumed the sand, performed the 20% recommended water change and low and behold two weeks later still no cyano, decreased development of film algae. Corals and fish and inverts (clam)did wonderful during treatment and responded amazingly well once the cyanobacteria was gone.
So if you have had it with unsightly cyanobacteria this might be an intervention that you should consider. I am very pleased with the treatment, the ease of the treatment, and I intend to use it routinely on a monthly bases (per directions). I have no idea what the magic ingredient is.
I can not emphasize enough that hobbyist use any product at their own discretion. Do what you feel comfortable with. I am just reporting my personal experience, this is not promotion of the product but a recounting of how the product worked for me.
