Hello all,

My aquarium sand is starting to turn pink. Looking at it and my rockwork I think it's Cyanobacteria (my google-fu is strong). But my question is, is this harmful? I was under the impression things are supposed to turn pink overtime.

Should I buy some Chemi-clean to take care of it?

Thanks

Cyanobacteria does have an effect on all the inhabitants of your tank. Just research lakes where they’ve had a Cyanobacteria outbreak and you’ll discover not only do fish die but some dogs have died due to the intake of Cyanobacteria. Chemiclean will kill the Cyanobacteria but make sure you follow it up by correcting the issues that caused it to express itself. Ie. correct flow issues, nutrient issues etc. if I stay on top of my water changes and avoid dead spots in the tank due to the lack of flow issues I don’t have Cyanobacteria.

You probably need more flow in that area. Chemiclean works good but getting more flow over there will cure it in time

+ 1 to everything above. Try syphoning and a water change (what are your parameters?) then increase flow. If that doesnt work, use chemiclean but address the cause
