Confused, been reading today one article says cycle as in live rock, 1-2. months, another says rinse, brush and pull off anything you see then put it in the tank, clarify

So what do you mean by live dry rock? If its dry it can not be live.

There is live rock and dry rock.

Dry rock is loaded with organics. Placed directly into a tank, you will have an algae explosion. This is why you cycle dry rock in a bucket.

Live rock goes right in to the tank.

Live rock is the most popular material used for natural biological filtration in saltwater aquariums. Aquarium live rock comes in two forms: wet and dry. Dry rock is going to be less expensive and easier to aquascape with. Dry rock we stock in our warehouse, and does not come with any living material on the surface.

I believe there are three types of rock.

1. Live rock that is kept wet and is purchased wet. This rock comes from the ocean and has living organisms.
2. Live rock that has dried and is purchased dry. This rock comes from the ocean and has dead organisms.
3. Dry rock. This is purchased dry. It comes from queries. It has no organisms. That is because it comes ancient reefs and every organic has been petrified.

I believe the one you are describing is number 3. It is a bit confusing when brs calls it dry live rock. The rock will not become alive until it is cycled in a tank or preferably cured. I think it is a marketing thing.

It would help to know what kind of rock you have. Natural rock or man made rock.

Natural rock... that was once alive will leach out all kinds of nutrients when exposed to water. It is best to do that in a trash can as opposed to your tank.

Also, the leaching of nutrients will make cause bacteria to flourish and populate the rock so when you start up your tank.. it should be cycled pretty darn quick.

Dry, man made rock can still leach phosphates..or at least mine did. Give it a soak and feed it some ammonia and you will get the bacteria establishment mentioned above.

That help?
