hi frens, 3rd reef being set up much bigger than other two, 7g, 30g, now 60g; i dont currently have a lot of salt in my bucket anymore maybe 1/6th of 5g bucket volume.
i still need it to change some water on my other 2 tanks for the time being and will not be buying more salt for maybe another month. What is the minimum specific gravity that i can cycle the new tank with? i want to use less salt to start with until i get more. specifically what is the salinity needed at the bare minimum to sustain a cycle, even if it is a bit slowed. thanks just want to get a small start off

This thread should help. Basically yes you can cycle at a lower salinity.

Just ensure you bring it up to your desired set point prior to adding any livestock.

Add 1.027 water slowly to the sump and recheck 4 hours after putting it in

Bare is 1.023

Thanks, I won't be putting in any livestock for a few months, I'm planning on moving my chaeto over to the new fuge, so the salinity issue is primarily how to not melt the chaeto, and any pods inside. I read somewhere that 1.018 was ok for just the bacteria to survive in? Thanks again

You can go decently low. Low teens works. Dr tim macna on cycling mentions it
