So my 55 has been tuning for over 3 years, I recently bought a 6 gallon nano, if I was to take 12 gallons from my 55 and put it in, would this mean I don't have to wait for it to cycle?

Ok, but I am trying to figure out how to get 12 gallons in a 6 gallon container. If you will tell me I plan to get rich.

IMO, if you put in some of your live rock and fill it from your 55 you have basically made it an extension of your 55. Then after that it is on it's own. That is a yes. If you add new sand you may get a couple of days or so of cloud, but it should hit a balance about then. I think, I have to leave a disclaimer because "all tanks are different". Good luck and let us know.

I don't see it much different than when I added a 30 long and new live sand to my system last month. It worked out perfectly with a two and half day of cloud then crystal clear. I would think it would be similar.

I would say you would have to wait still. The majority of the bacteria that keeps the tank balanced is in the live rock, substrate, glass, etc. Just adding "used" water to a new tank will not cycle it. Adding substrate and live rock from the existing tank along with the water will give it a good jump start, but you will still have to wait for it to balance out. Doing this will take less time for the cycle, but there will still be one.

I'm curious as to how you're going to get 12 gallons of water in a 6 gallon tank!?

As has already been said, you will need to use more than just water from your existing tank, you will need some of the LR as well, don't disturb the substrate however. I set up a 6 gallon nano using existing water and rock and never had a cycle.
