Going to start a 10 gallon tank using dry rock, and dry sand. I was wondering whats a good way to cycle the tank cheaply. I don't really care about time I can wait, but whats a good, effective and cheap way to cycle a 10 gallon?

Thanks,

Luka

buy a bacteria additive, sometimes called bio-boost, and dose pure ammonia to 4 ppm, then walk away.

I would just go to the super market, get about a dollars worth of shrimp and then throw a small piece in the tank to rot. Wait a few weeks and then have your LFS test your ammonia, nitrites & nitrates for you. Piece of cake.

the shrimp is an effective method, and a few bucks cheaper than ine (bio-boost and ammonia will cost ya about 5 bucks) but I cant get past the rotting dead shrimp in my tank lol

Time also comes into play. If you keep a free ammonia 2-4 level by using cleaning ammonia vs the low level of a shrimp and use the bottle bac you can get rocks ready in two weeks, nice to have that option too. A shrimp or few also provides ammonia it just is a bit slower than good forced cycling.
