Hey guys,

Today is cycling day 6! Exciting.... I have a question for any of you that would like to provide me their expertise :) I am using the Red Sea Reef Mature kit. I started with 40 pounds of caribsea life rock instead of live rock. I also accidentally dose MicroBacter before I read the part that said do not dose any other bacteria.

Anyway, I have absolutely zero algae in my tank but the kit says I should. My water is crystal clear with the following parameters: temp 79, pH 8.2, SG 1.024, ammonia 0.25ppm, nitrite 0.25ppm, nitrates 30ppm (why so high?)

Do you think my cycling is actually progressing? When I dosed the Red Sea micro bacteria it didn't say to turn the protein skimmer so I left it on...hope that didn't mess anything up

I didn't have any algae until a month and it never even got bad. I wouldn't worry too much. If you have nitrates that fast you can stop dosing ammonia and see if the amm/nit levels drop to 0. If so I'd say you can add fish

Looks like you are on your way...I second the just wait it out until ammonia and nitrite drop to zero...some have protein skimmers on during cycling, while others don't--it shouldn't affect bacteria growth. I kept mine on so it would break in while I waited for the cycle to finish.

Your only on day 6... Give yourself about a month for your whole tank to cycle. It will come!

I wasn't trying to rush my cycle so please don't assume that. I'm not new to the hobby and know patience is key. I was only asking a question...

Dido, this is the easy hangout time. Let the cycle run its course

I never got any algae besides one diatom bloom using the Red Sea reef mature pro kit. I wouldn't worry about it at all

And I was just answering your question. No worries man. There are a few things that need to be asked an stated to make sure that we as hobbyist don't skip steps trying to help people that ask for help.
