I have my lights on 3hr and off 1hr for a total of 9hr photo period. Is this bad for corals at all? I do it because of heat issues, it's a really small Pico.

I am not an expert, but I believe the algae have a "ramp up" period for photosynthesis. The first period of time (minutes/hours... I am not sure on the details) goes toward charging up the photosystems. Energy isn't really generated until after that period. This means that longer, continuous photoperiods are more efficient (up to a point).

From everything that I have read, consistency is key. I guess if the corals are acclimated to this they could be ok. Are there any places on earth that has a weather pattern that blocks out the sun entirely during the day for an hour or two at a time?
