cycling my 8 gal

I started this tank two weeks ago. I put dry sand and live rock in it. I also put a small HOB filter on it with some more live rock and sponge in it. When I first started it I put in some frozen mysis shrimp thinking it might help the cycle. I didn't think I needed to use a fish or nitrifying bacteria. Was I wrong?

Amonia- 0.50 ppm
Nitrite- 0 ppm
Nitrate- 0ppm
pH- 8.0
I've tested everyday for two weeks the parameters haven't changed at all.

Thats what my cycle was like, i just waited it out and it worked out great. just be patient

Literally over night the Amonia went to zero but nothing else went up. Weird.
