Cycling my tank, first time using test kits, am I doing this right?

I did a 90% change after my cycle because I had 40-50ppm nitrates. It didn’t harm anything in my case.

If it makes a difference, my nitrates were reading 100, I did a 20% water change, and then they were still reading 100. Maybe this means that my test is just wrong? Or maybe 20% isn't big enough to see a difference?

If I do wait, what do you recommend as an ammonia source during those weeks?

Nothing to be honest. You’ll go through through the ugly stages before you can get some CUC. You’ll know. You’ll see it. If you really want to put something in a piece of shrimp.
