Hi
I have a Reefer 250l, + 20Kg of Reel Reef Rock, which here in UK was supplied in a dry state, I have left DT bare bottomed but intend to put some siporax in sump in next few days. The tank with RR Rock has been filled with salt and 'run' at 25C for 2-3 weeks around xmas time. I finally got around to adding Dr Tims one and only 3 days ago, I used a full 8oz bottle together with 250 drops of Dr Tims Ammonium Chloride. After 24hrs the tests results were,
Salifert Kit
Nh4=0 ( white & cloudy I assume that is zero )
No2=1
No3=100

I tested again today
NH3=0
No2=1
didn't test No3

Current pH=7.94, it was 8.1 before adding Bacteria
Sg=1.0245

What to do next ??
Crazy high Nitrate but is that a false reading???
Any help gratefully appreciated,

Tony

Water changes are in order to bring down the Nitrate. This is most likely a byproduct of the ammonia cycle. You want to then add ammonia again. If that gets consumed in 24hrs. change the water to rid yourself of nitrates and you are ready to go .

Tony,
I trust the Salifert nitrate test kit and follow @lapin 's lead.
At least your close and burning nitrates.

Ive added 2 litres of siporax into my sump, should I add more Dr Tims one and only to seed the media.

Todays tests

Temp 25C
SG 1.0246
pH 8.01
NH4 0
NO2 0.25
NO3 100

Thanks

The ammoina is being converted to nitrate. That’s why there is an apparent spike.

I’d wait a couple weeks and do the wc. And also order your fish and cuc.

If the ammonia is testing zero already that quickly , the tank is cycling.
If you wait a week , add some more ammoina , and see how fast it is processed by the next day. If it is zero again, the tank is cycling.

Interesting that your rock was dry , it’s usually sold wet, and live.

It’s been 21 days since I started the cycle, yesterday I did a 40% water change. Today’s tests still show nitrite is 0.25-0.5 with nitrates up around 100. Is it still a matter of waiting??
Btw I don’t have my lights on at all.
