Just curious, couple questions.

when you guys first get your tank up and running to cycle, what do you have "on" in the tank?
do you run your skimmer?

ill be adding water into my new tank at the end of the week. my last one i didn't run my skimmer till i started adding live stock.

also,

my heater doesn't fit too well in the sump, would having it hidden in the overflow column be an option?

I wouldn't run a skimmer or any reactors until after you do your big water change when your nitrates jump way up. Other than that... heater, lights, wave maker, if no sump then whatever means of filtration you're using. You could try putting the heater there, i'm surprised it would fit in the over flow column and not in your sump. I'm skeptical of how efficient the heater would be in that location.

the sump i have is relatively small, and the heat i have is kind of long. rouchly 15inches. the tnak is a 60G cube so the heater would slide right in to the over flow, but yes i am skeptical as well. i might give it a try and see, if not ill just find a heater that fits in the sump.
thanks for the input! :)

are you using live rock or dried rock just curious regarding preset bac

50-50 between BRS reef saver dry live rock and "real reef rock" (the artifical pre cycled stuff) with "live sand"

nice no hitchhiker setup~ is good idea. will arrive with inherent filtration abilities chiefly due to the sand part, a little from the rock as well but moreso the sand. when the base catches up, good to go.

Exactly! My first tank was a nightmare, I dove in head first with zero knowledge and an impatient mindset. Basically just set money on fire.
Trying to follow everything to the T on this one, with good equipment and patience.

I run everything, but charcoal or other chemical means of filtration, that is just me. If a rock is dry when you get it, it's no longer a biological filter medium until seeded again. I use BRS dry rock as well.

You can put the heater anywhere as long as it's submerged per manufacturers directions and you find placement you can live with or like.

ATO came in today :)
1 piece at a time. :)

half the rock gets here on thursday. hopefully complete the aquascape and get water in on Saturday :D

I run my heater in the over flow and it works great !!!! I had the same problem wouldn't fit in my sump so I set it up there and heats the water very quickly.... I think the heater in the over flow is as efficient as the sump maybe even better

Awesome. thanks for the feedback. i feel like that spot is ideal, less clutter in the sump, yet not an eye sore inside the tank :)
