Cycling with raw shrimp

I threw one in as I read some people do that here. Temp at 78 degrees F. It cooked overnight lol is that supposed to happen?

Pretty much. Your ammonia should go up, followed by nitrites which will convert to nitrates once the cycle is complete. This may take some time.
 
Yes....I would throw it in a media bag though if you haven't already to keep all the pieces contained as it starts to fall apart.
 
I'm in the process of cycling a nem tank that I'm putting together. I forgo the shrimp and just dose pure ammonia. The last time I tried the shrimp method the tank was too close to where I watch TV and the smell was unbearable so I pulled the shrimp and just dosed pure ammonia. Not waiting for the shrimp to breakdown and the ammonia to rise could probably save a week off the cycling process also.
