Hello everyone. I am new to the salt water aquarium hobby. And let me just start out by saying, this is one of the most amazing hobbies I've done. I have a quick question though. Would I be able to run a protein skimmer after I added new sand? My tank got really cloudy and I know that's normal but I don't want to eliminate the important bacteria by running it. [emoji12]

Well, you could run the skinmer and it won't have any effect on your bacteria. the skimmer removes dissolved organics, and more than likely it won't have anything to remove. so no real reason to run it until after you add fish.

For the time of cycling as @Duke4Life already mentioned no skimmer is necessary.
Some ppl let it run but dial it back as it won't remove anything but in that case you can break it in.
Skimmers need some break in time any ways.
Besides that skimmer removing organic waste it removes also free floating bacteria, ALK, CAL etc etc even beneficial elements.
