Cyclonic mechanical filtration.

I‘ve been thinking (dangerous activity) and I was wondering if instead of having filter socks or roller filters, if a cyclonic separator could be used to separate detritus from our water. Like how a Dyson vacuum cleaner or a wood shop dust collector works.
‘Wouldn’t it be cool to eliminate floss or socks?
Any thoughts?

Sounds like my protein skimmer. Lol.
Some commercial aquariums use sand filters. Just big drums or containers filled with sand... u could do that on a small level. Lol.

There was a guy who made small sand filters for aquariums. Maybe 10 years ago on ebay. Smaller than pool sand filters.

I love the idea and have been thinking about it for a year or so. I was hoping my engineering son would help me but he is too wrapped up in school now. If you google using centrifugal force to filter you will come across a filter for extracting sand from well water. I wrote the company but they were not very optimistic that it would work for detritus. The density of detritus is close to the density of water. Good luck

There is also a filter that does separate particles, down to bacteria! but it relies on separating the flow of water into two channels, one pure and one contaminated. It then dumps the contaminated water. This won't work in an aquarium set up but was designed for third world countries to purify water.
