I had a service man disturb my sand and had an extreme cyno outbreak . I am cleaning cyno out every other day. My tank paramters were Alk 8.3, Cal 430, Mag 1325. Sal .026. Nitrates 8.0
Phos. .07. I was told that the bad bacteria that was released from the sand are now outcompeting good bacteria. I was told to carbon dose and Microbacter 7. Things just got worse. Nitrates went down to 1 but phosphates went up to 1.1. I then put Rows phos in to reduce phosphates. I stopped media reactor with Bacto pellets because it stripped out most of nitrates. I am still cleaning tank out every other day of cyno although nnow I also have green Cyno? I stopped running carbon 1 month ago at start of this. Nitrates still at 1. Phosphates are now.08. Using Hannah test kits. I don't know what else to do but I have been reefing for so many years and never had this. When cyno appeared I used Chemi Clean. It worked most of time.

Does any one have ideas. I am totally frustrated.

Siphon out what you can. Cut lights to 6 hours using blue and UV no whites. Increase flow to affected areas. Dose PNS probio which is a natural bacteria supplement.

I've never used it. Which is something I don't normally do to say "use this" when I haven't. But I've never heard anything but positive feedback for this and their Byprosis Flux. I'm also a big "stay away from chemicals" type of dude, but next time or if I ever have a crazy cyano outbreak again I'm 100% ordering some. Cyano is my mortal enemy.

Worth a shot.

Same thing happened to me except I disturbed the sand bed catching a fish and tearing the tank apart. Can you get some pure nitrate to get that number up. I’m doing that and vacuuming for now. Adding some mb7 too.

The only thing that made my patches go away was cleaning my return pump every week keeping the speed high. I moved to a significantly faster pump and Ive yet to see any come back. I was testing in the beginning while cleaning it and saw it working so that is the reason I even upgraded to be honest.

Assuming everything else is within a typical range and has been stable anyway.

Sorry,
You were given bad advise. At this point any form of carbon dosing will fuel cyano.

As said earlier cut back your photo period, remain patient and pulling an ATI icp test would not hurt either.

Good Luck!

Should I keep skimmer off to raise nitrates

I wouldn't. Skimmers do much more than help with nutrients, such as exporting organics and aerating the water.

If you feel you need more nitrate, dosing it is a better option.

will this stuff also work on green cyano? any ideas?

Try dosing live phyto.
