Before I did my water change I siphoned cyno off of the sand bed into a mesh bag. I wanted to see if I could put the sand back into the tank. Would rinsing it in tap water be enough or would the cyno still be on the sand? After rinsing, should I lay the sand in the sun for a few days?

I dont think rising it in tap water then rinsing it finally in ro/di water and letting it sun dry would be a bad idea. That however seems like a lot of work to just add little bits of sand back to a tank.

Well it’s a little over 16oz so half a yogurt container. It’s a 90 gallon tank. Before going through this process I was just wanting to see if the Cyano will be killed with the rinsing and sun drying.

Rinsing it in rodi should do the trick. No need to dry it it, better to save the beneficial bacteria that has adhered to the gains. Cyano is ever present in the water column and nobody knows for sure what causes it to precipitate out and mat up. We do have suspects.

Rinsing in tap and drying it out might leave stuff on the grains you don't want in your tank.
