Cz Exclusive: Ora Oregon Tort Pics

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, (WHICH ISN'T MUCH...LOL) ORA WILL NOT PROPAGATE ANY CORAL UNLESS THEY CAN OBTAIN A LARGE NUMBER OF MOTHER COLONIES OF THE SAME SPECIES. I DON'T THINK THEY HAVE EVER GROWN ANY OF THEIR CORAL STOCK FROM ONE OR TWO PIECES, IT IS JUST TO MONETARILY AND TIME CONSUMING. IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, THEY HAVE BEEN CULTIVATING THEIR OREGON TORT FROM SEVERAL LARGE COLONIES SINCE 2004.

I guess this is different than with the Dustins deepwater when Dustin had only one colony and with the Hawkins Echinata (turaki) that they brought back from europe. I saw an ORA oregon last year at one of the trade shows. I just wish ORA would identify their corals correclty. Phil's Granulosa? Echinata?

i agree with the mislabeling thing. i heard dustin say he doesn't care what it is...he just calls it whatever the person called he got it from.

ORA didnt name this coral the ORA Oregon Tortuosa, we don't have it listed anywhere as such. It is just true Oregon Tortuosa. We traded some California Tort for 4 1" frags from a guy named Jim in Portland Oregon in May of 2004.

As to the scientific names, the latin names that are sometimes part of our trade names come from the original growers of the coral. The Granulosa and Echinata names have been used in Germany for many many years, we added the human names in front of them in an attempt to give them a trade name rather than saying this is the "real" name of this coral.

Welcome to CZ dustin!

as far as the names go, i've had no problem with the majority of ORA names...i.e.

-dustin's deepwater
-purple pillow
-pearl berry
-tort
-blue bottle brush
-german blue polyp acro
-roscoe's

but the problem is mostly with the phil's granulosa and hawkin's echinata. as they are definitely not a granulosa and echinata respectively. its not really that big deal...as it just a name, but its just a little misleading to those who take species names seriously when collecting. it also spreads allot of misinformation. i'd get rid of the species names all together and just give them all creative names and let people decide for themselves.

Welcome to CZ Dustin! ;)

The Phil's Granulosa looks identical to the Maricultured Acropora Suharsonoi.

In my opinion not really I have yet to get a neon green Suharsonoi and I have both right now and they are definatly diffrent but I would say lokini or granulosa.

now THAT'S the answer I was looking for with respect to the naming. Thank you for clearing that up.

Smurfn I have the same bulb...I picked up a real nice price for a brown-out sps....This thing is turning a turquoise with neon green polys...I love this Radium bulb...I get awesome growth on everything, and the color diff is tremendous. How long do you wait to change yours out?

the same SE 250w bulb? i run mine on an HQI ballast. how bout you?

i prob change mine out around 8 months.

also want to say that i did a little digging and what most people perceive as suharsonoi isnt event suharsonoi
i thought phils was a suharsonoi at first also because every etailer i go to has the same type of coral as the suharsonoi, but if you actually look at a suharsonoi it looks nothing like the yellow/green deepwater coral everyone is used to
its actually a Acropora multiacuta which is what I believe the ora phils is
if you look at coralite structure and polyp placement its very similar
but thats just my guess again

personally, i don't really care what species it is. but its obviously not a granulosa. so if ORA isn't sure of the species name, they should just create a nifty name for it as to not confuse people. (i.e. pearlberry)

In any case, it's a nice looking piece and now that it's being cultured in controlled environments by ORA...should at least have less chance of it being brown for a year or more as some of the americultured stuff seems to do.

i have the original oregon tort and the ora oregon tort

the ora is from a friend that bought from liveaquaria at the swap they had last year

I think that's a fine method for identification as a rule of thumb.
