I'd like to upgrade my tank's return to something way nicer than what I got now. Anybody have a name of a company worth digging into? This is going to be a high turnover pump in the 2-4 thousand gph area

Varios 8 is 2600. I love that it comes with a float switch and controller. It's also pretty silent for how much water it's moving.

Iwaki is by far the best long term bang for your buck out there. A little high on power but I have seen most run for 10 years plus with only one or two cleanings at most. Artesians are close, they last about 8 years until the shaft seal blows, better than reeflow, about 2-3 years, but both are big. Red dragons are great too but $$$$$, all the newer DC pumps are ok to good depending on price but haven't been around long enough for a solid review.

High power is better, what I'm looking for is a return pump plumbed to feed multiple tanks in one branch.

Checkout Reeflo pumps. They are dependable, several different models, but are not the quietest pumps.
If you are looking for quiet, checkout the Red Dragons, VarioS pumps.

In the 2-4K GPH range, Ampmaster is the best of breed IMO. They are very reliable, will last decades and are not too power hungry for a pump that moves a lot of water. Ampmaster = Sequence/Reeflo that are actually reliable beyond a few years.

Is this a pump that I will hear in the next room?

I will look at them!

You will not hear it in the next room. If you are in the same room and have a surround, then you will hear the hum, but its not too loud.

BRS latest video offers some good insight on what we’ve talked about and reiterates what was said about the Reef Octopus Varios Pump.
